How Pestalozzi has changed the world

Pestalozzi is a UK-based charity with more than 60 years’ experience of offering life-changing opportunities to young people from underprivileged communities around the world. Pestalozzi provides scholarships for exceptional 16-19-year old’s who are academically bright, but have limited educational prospects in their home countries. In recent years our students have come from Nepal, Bhutan, India, Indonesia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Belize, Uganda and Tibetan Communities in Exile. These young people have all demonstrated their enthusiasm for helping to make a difference in their communities. Pestalozzi students live for two years in a multi-cultural, multi-faith community, where they welcome difference and embrace diversity. They study for the International Baccalaureate Diploma and undertake a broad range of extra-curricular activities, gaining a holistic education focused on the Pestalozzi principles of educating the Head, Heart and Hands. Pestalozzi scholarships give these young people an opportunity they would not otherwise receive – the chance to develop their potential, become empowered, pursue their dreams and go on to make a difference in the world. Pestalozzi also provides alumni access to seed funding through the Pestalozzi Development Fund, which enables them to set up projects or activities that benefit their own or other developing communities, helping them to realise their potential and make a greater positive impact in the world.
Since the scholarship programme started in 1997,

we have provided

399

young people with a scholarship

to further their education so they can make a difference in the world

The immediate indirect impact is on the families and communities of each Pestalozzi scholar. They raise the aspirations for their peer group and those who come after them. They volunteer in schools, clinics, environmental programmes and community focused groups. We anticipate that every Pestalozzi scholar will have a positive impact on at least 10 other people before they complete the IB Diploma at UWC.

Our alumni break the cycle of intergenerational poverty, meaning that they have a significant impact on the generations who follow behind them. A comparison of Pestalozzi alumni career paths and occupations with those of their parents demonstrates how the educational opportunity they have received has helped to enhance their options and economic standing.

Help give life-changing opportunities to young people

Our alumni have built schools in Nepal and established non-profits in Zambia. They are computer science majors and chemistry minors, Harvard graduates, PhD students, engineers, published authors and refugee tutors. They have gone on to set up libraries in Nepal, teach classes in Ohio and build toilet blocks in rural Bhutan. The one thread of commonality running through all of these journeys is Pestalozzi. Without an education, how much of this would have been possible?
