After graduating from Pestalozzi in 2013. Bharat returned to Nepal where he gained a degree in Maths and Economics from Tri Chandra College, a constituent campus of Tribhuvan University.
Bharat reflected on the months after he initially returned to Nepal in June 2013.
“The months I spent at home made it my longest stay since 2004 and I had a really wonderful time sharing my experiences with my family, friends, old people and my neighbourhood. They were really happy to see me and were eager to know more about Pestalozzi and the UK.
Almost every evening I chatted with some of the grade 10 students in my village, talking about academics and giving them words of encouragement to continue pursuing education after school level. It’s hard because many of the young boys go to India for work due to their poor financial background.
I also gave a speech at a Higher Secondary School, entitled ‘Significance of education and how it can bring positive changes in our lives’. I encouraged the students there to realise the importance of education. Alongside this, I was able to talk with school’s teachers and make them aware of some Western education approaches towards academics, such as group work presentation, internal assignments, teacher-student discussion.”
Bharat has used his time effectively, gaining his degree, having worked as project coordinator with the Society of Ex-Budhanilkantha Students (SEBS) to build a primary school destroyed by the 2015 earthquake, as well as a spell teaching at Bloom Nepal School.
He joined the National Democratic Institute as an Intern at the beginning of 2022 and shortly after became a Program Assistant. NDI supports, strengthens and safeguards democratic institutions, processes, norms and values worldwide through citizen participation, openness and accountability in government. In Nepal, it has been engaging since 1994 with political parties, parliamentarians, government agencies and civil society organizations for democracy strengthening. It conducts programs for political party and parliamentary development, voter and civic education, domestic election observation, and youth and women’s political empowerment. When the project completed he reapplied to work for a new project at NDI and started his position as a Senior Program Assistant in April 2023.
