Arnold attends Clinton Global Initiative University meeting

Young people leading change to make an impact in their communities.

Arnold is a Pestalozzi alumnus from the Class of 2016, who is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Horticulture at Auburn University, USA.

“I was honored to attend this year’s Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) annual meeting at Vanderbilt University, Nashville as a CGI U alumni member and commitment mentor. This annual meeting is an opportunity for the CGI U students and alumni to network and collaborate with global leaders, experts, and innovators.

In 2020 as a CGI U student, my commitment to action was Joint Organic Aquaponics (JOA) which sought to grow fish and vegetables in a constructed ecosystem using recyclable materials, and minimum water and fertilizer to reduce both food shortages and economic hardships in Uganda. JOA went on to win the Mastercard Foundation Social Entrepreneurship Fund at EARTH University in 2019 and, in 2020, it was one of the first projects to receive funding through the Pestalozzi Development Fund. Our current farming practice training increases self-reliance, employment, and fortification against climate vulnerability.

My current role as a CGI U mentor is to facilitate conversations, share resources and support CGI U students to implement their commitments to action. At the CGI U meeting I engaged in interactive conversations about the power young people hold, why it is important for us to act and how we can lead change and create impact in our communities.

I was inspired by the speakers including the 42nd US President Bill Clinton, Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton the Vice Chair of the Clinton Foundation among others. My favorite moment was the day of action, where I volunteered with the Second Harvest Food Bank to provide food to different families in Nashville and I also had the opportunity to speak with President Bill Clinton during his visit to the Second Harvest Food Bank. We had a conversation about Uganda, some of the work the Clinton Foundation has done towards improving healthcare in the country.”
