Country: Uganda

Pestalozzi Scholar: 2016-2018

“The exposure you get from living in a diverse community may not show at the beginning, but once you go out into the world, and start being that ripple in the ocean, that is when you realize the prize you have won. – Thanks Pestalozzi, the ripple is still alive and causing more ripples.” Eric is from Kamwokya, a settlement in Kampala.  His father has a small grocery stall selling basic essentials, his mother is a housewife and he has five siblings. Eric’s family also have 5 acres of farm land for growing crops. In Uganda, Eric was a day scholar. He got up at 5.30am every day to walk to school and then would work on the grocery stall every evening before completing his homework.

An active participant in the student community, Eric graduated from Pestalozzi in 2018 after completing his A levels. He is currently in his second semester of a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at Victoria University in Uganda, which he is self-funding. As well as his studies Eric is working as a developer in a software company and helping to deliver IT training with Kampabits, a youth based social enterprise that uses ICT creatively to improve the lives of less privileged young people.

‘During my time at Kampabits we have mentored and trained over 360 youths helping them to attain new job opportunities. Through collaboration with Tunga, a software company, I also got the chance to train several Bootcamps starting with the Women in Tech programme, where we focused most of the upcoming women in the software development atmosphere. In the two cohorts’ 6-month programme, I headed the training and trained about 32 women in web development, most of who are now working with different software companies,’ shared Eric.

Eric has spent the last couple of year’s upskilling himself in software and web development, finding software solutions for companies, creating simple websites in WordPress for clients and working on data-driven systems.

‘I am also learning about android development in preparation for a project that I am currently working on in partnership with another group of motivated individuals. The project is called Gomama and is focused on helping pregnant mothers during their pregnancy by helping them make savings as well as providing mother kits when they are about to give birth.’

Education is the key to empowering young people to improve their lives and their community. By setting up a regular payment to Pestalozzi or giving a one-off gift, it means that we can continue to provide opportunities to young people like Faisal who will go on to make a difference in the world.
